We have decided to offer a place where anyone can
ask a question,  pertaining to Saw Filing,

hopefully someone will give-up the secret

How does one determine the proper amount of tension for a given saw without going through the trial and error process ? is there a specific formula for determining this factor?

Eg;
34” edger saw
.140 plate .190 kerf
turning at 1475 RPM
what should the tensioning be in rpm gauges ,
versus say a 28” saw .120 plate
. 170 kerf
turning at 1850 RPM .

Obviously we want the most stable saw we can get but how to get there?

How do I get rid of washboard from a circular saw?

----Problem - Change in horsepower to the arbor.
Missed comunication between Filers & Maintenance Department

solved----
lower the kerf by .005 per side from .130 to .120 with .100 Plate =
                                                           Less Horsepower required=
                                                                              Less saw dust =
                                                                      Elimanate spillage =

Some other suggestions:

  1. Shorten the gullet depth.
  2. Cut a 1/8" wide X 3/4 " notch at the bottom of the gullet.
  3. Varable pitch saws.
  4. Change the tooth angle 2 degrees at a time from 30 to as low as 25.

Do you have any individuals in your organization who either presently or in
the past sharpened vintage crosscut saw commercially? I'd be interested in
talking or corresponding with them. We (the US Forest Service) are probably the largest users of traditional crosscut saws left inasmuch as power tools are prohibited in our federally designated wilderness areas.
